Green in So Many Ways
The ultimate carbon-neutral way to cook is the solar-powered oven. This “negawatt” novelty uses only the sun’s rays to bake your food, like an unplugged slow cooker. The Sport Solar Oven, manufactured by the nonprofit Solar Oven Society (SOS), is a lightweight, easy-to-use solar oven that can cook just about anything, weather permitting: meats, fish, chicken, vegetables, breads, grains, pastas, rice—you can even bake cakes and cookies. It’s made partly from recycled plastic soda bottles, and the Solar Oven’s profits fund its mission to fight deforestation by distributing sun ovens in developing nations where forests are routinely cut down to provide firewood for cooking.
