ICESTONE COUNTERTOPS
Broken Glass + Concrete = Beauty
A great way to recycle old glass bottles is to put them into concrete countertops. That’s what Icestone and several other companies are doing. The glass is crushed into small fragments before being Added to the concrete; the mix then gets poured into forms, where it hardens. Grinding the cured material with progressively finer abrasives yields a smooth-surfaced countertop that’s durable, beautiful, and green. The countertop may be tailored to taste by tinting the concrete and specifying different glass colors, so color combinations abound.
A green house will have more insulation than local building codes require. In fact, it should have enough extra insulation to be at least 15 to 20 percent more energy efficient than a standard code compliant house, according to Energy Star guidelines.
